Asbestos

Asbestos Protection

How do you treat Asbestos?

The South African Government have passed very strict laws on how to handle, treat, remove, repair and encapsulate Asbestos wherever it is found, whether on roofs, walls, barge boards and boxes etc.

For a full document on these laws you can download them here...

We also have a brochure and details here... www.kote.co.za/asbestokote

What does AsbestoKote do that makes it so effective?

(See picture illustration below)...

AsbestoKote is a very high-performance pure acrylic, proprietary formulated, polymer binder. It is UV stable, VOC free,(earth and people friendly) remains flexible for an extremely extended time period, is totally hydrophobic (waterproof) which means it will not allow water or air to penetrate through to the surface thus stopping growth of any encapsulated organic plant life. It is the ideal manner in which to "suffocate" living material on your roof. It is available in any colour, simply supply the RAL code and we will get close to matching the colour.

Treating with encapsulation:

Encapsulation requires a simple process of "painting" the surface with an approved binder of which our AsbestoKote is the choice because of its extreme efficacy in binding all the fibers within and upon the surface of asbestos sheeting.

When it comes to preparing the surface you are limited by the law! As an example you cannot use wire brushing or high pressure water jets which makes sense because it will dislodge the fibers into the air and could cause the damage to our health.

  1. When it rains, there is obviously water falling out of the sky and onto your roof and whilst this is not the ideal time to clean the roof, one can emulate the rain with a soft water flow using a garden hose and gentle spray. Before attempting this method it is critical to fit a "sock", such as if found at pool shops to capture debris floating on the top of the water in swimming pools, into each downpipe leading from your gutters. This will trap the dirt and fibers and must be disposed of as hazardous material.
  2. Cleaning is a non aggressive and gentle method to dislodge moss or liken which stand proud of the surface and should be rather easy to remove. A plastic scraper used with care, will dislodge the growth.
  3. Rinse well and then remove the "socks" and dispose of in a responsible manner allow to dry for a day before returning to apply the first coat of AsbestoKote.
  4. The first coast can be diluted with 10% water as a primer to penetrate the surface and begin the "binding" process. Spray is best but a soft household broom can also be used or a roller. Allow to dry for about an hour in good warm weather.
  5. The second and third coats of AsbestoKote must be applied neat as it comes from the bucket. Leave an hour between each coat.

CAUTION:

Beware of "cheap" products claiming to do the same thing! it is very enticing to choose the cheapest option, mostly with regret later down the line. We have been doing this for forty years and are renowned for our innovation and product quality worldwide.
