Kote Tutoring Academy
This page is dedicated to the understanding of what happens to water based polymers during curing time and its significance...
Almost all single pack or 1K coatings take 7 that is seven days to cure allowing for the full self-cross linking to be complete. What does this mean?
At molecular level, tiny particles of solid material (acrylic) that are held in suspension in the water based liquid of the polymer combine to form a solid whole similar to shrink wrapping. This "coming together" or bonding takes place as the water evaporates. Once all the water has evaporated you are left with a single sheet of acrylic plastic that will protect the substrate.
So many users of these products do not understand this process and take chances with the weather, or the methodology of application, or outside factors that impact negatively on the curing time required for full efficacy of this marvelous modern technology. This comment applies to contractors as well as the enthusiastic DIY expert. If you have studied chemistry, and in particular, coatings chemistry, not paint technology, (that is old and very much out of touch with reality), protective coatings, (our game) is a very different high-performance technology and requires proper understanding and practice.
Should you fail to understand or accurately follow simple instructions, do not blame the product. In forty, yes 40 years i have never had a failure, it is always the ignorance of the applicator who loves taking short cuts or gambling with the weather. What has been learned in the "painting industry" does not apply to protective coatings! so when i hear contractors telling me they have 25 years experience, i always ask, "with paint or protective coatings?"
One is experienced as a plowman using a horse to plow his farm, the other is a jockey who wins horse races. They both brag they have been in the horse business all their lives but the one is vastly different from the other.
There are white papers that explain the nature of polymers and you are welcome to read this on the internet.
Kote Products have an excellent reputation for a reason, we manufacture the very finest protective coatings money can buy, and we have never copied other peoples products, we are inventors and formulating chemists with a lust for innovation. We back every product with extensive technical backup and assistance. This website is only one such example.
Our mothership website www.kote.co.za has loads of brochures, videos and instructions that will help you to become professional.
